Core Rule Change: Variation Reviews Shift from "Forced Sharing" to Precise "Feature-Related" Matching

Amazon recently announced that from February 12 to May 31, 2026, the platform will implement comprehensive adjustments to the review sharing rules for product variations, aiming to enhance the accuracy of reviews and optimize the shopping experience for buyers.

Under the current rules, all reviews for child products under the same parent ASIN are aggregated and displayed, regardless of significant differences in features or specifications. This often leads to a mismatch between the ratings consumers see and the specific variation they intend to purchase, causing unmet expectations that can result in negative reviews and returns. Additionally, negative reviews for individual child products can unfairly impact the ratings of other well-performing variations, affecting overall sales performance.

Drawing the Line: Which Variations Can Share Reviews? Which Must Be Independent?

After the new rules take effect, reviews will continue to be shared only when differences between child products are minor and do not affect core functionality. If differences significantly impact the user experience or functionality, reviews will be displayed independently. The system will identify products based on their category and key attributes, and sellers will be notified of changes 30 days prior to the adjustment.

According to platform guidelines, variations of the following types may still share reviews: color/pattern differences, such as the same T-shirt in different colors; size/dimension differences, such as Twin vs. Queen sizes for bedding; packaging quantity differences, such as 250ml vs. 500ml bottles of the same shampoo; minor scent variations, such as lemon-scented vs. fragrance-free detergent; multi-model accessory compatibility, such as the same phone holder for iPhone and Samsung models; minor cosmetic tweaks, such as matte vs. glossy finishes on the same tumbler.

However, reviews for the following cases are more likely to be split and displayed separately, requiring special attention: performance/power differences, such as laptops with different RAM capacities or drills with different power ratings; appliances where size correlates with power, such as waffle makers with different capacities or air conditioners with different cooling outputs.

Response Measures:

This policy is expected to significantly impact seller operations: the number of reviews and star ratings for some products may decrease substantially; promoting new products will become more challenging, as the strategy of relying on established products to boost new ones will be less effective; sellers who rely on extensive catalog listings or have benefited from review sharing will face greater challenges. For example, a product that originally had a 4.8-star rating with over 2,000 reviews might only display a few hundred reviews after the adjustment.

To adapt to these changes, it is recommended that sellers take the following actions as soon as possible: audit existing variations to ensure accurate variation type settings; optimize product detail pages to clearly explain performance differences; closely monitor platform notifications and promptly adjust operational strategies.
